2018-19 Cal State Fullerton Shot Chart
Fullerton has had a lot of offensive struggles except on the left wing and at the rim. One thing to note is that they’ve been able to convert that shot from the free throw line which Washington often gives the opponent. If Fullerton is able to consistently make it then it could cause UW to alter their defense a little.
Cal State Fullerton is both better and worse than their 4-9 record might lead you to believe. They’re 12th in KenPom’s strength of schedule rankings and have already played 5 top-50 teams. But those rankings don’t include games against non D-1 opponents and the Titans have won both of those games. Their only two D-1 games that they’ve been able to pull out were against sub-275 teams.
This is a very veteran Fullerton team that ranks 3rd nationally in minutes continuity (UW is 1st). Seven of their nine leaders in minutes played are upperclassmen. One thing Fullerton isn’t though is big. They play at least 4 guards at all time and none of their 6 leaders in minutes played is taller than 6’7. The 6’9 Johnny Wang is their tallest player and will probably start but he’s not much of a rim protector and still only plays 15 minutes per game. Think Sam Timmins last year but shorter.
The Titans aren’t very efficient on offense despite playing with a short guard-oriented lineup which you think might provide more shooting. They’ve made only 29.5% of their 3-point attempts against D-1 competition. Kyle Allman Jr. is their leading scorer at 18.8 points per game and he’s their best shooter leading the team in 3-pt makes and attempts (38.6%). Their other prolific scorer is Khalil Ahmad who more than chips in with 17.5 ppg on 34.3% shooting from deep.
If both teams play as they have this season then the Huskies should be able to hold Cal State Fullerton to fewer than 60 points and cruise to a double digit victory. This is the last warm-up before the conference opener against Washington State on Saturday so it would be great to see the Huskies have an excellent shooting night and get off the snide offensively.
Washington Huskies– 69, Cal State Fullerton- 56
