Former Corona Centennial DL Jaylen Johnson excited to take part in Rose Bowl traditions like Lawry’s Beef Bowl – Whittier Daily News

BEVERLY HILLS — Sixty-three years later, the Lawry’s Beef Bowl still stands as one of the highlights of Rose Bowl week.

On Friday, the Washington Huskies sat down at Lawry’s The Prime Rib for their chance to dine on the restaurant’s titular dish, a night after Ohio State did the same.

After walking the red carpet with the Arcadia High School band welcoming them with songs like Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and Outkast’s “Hey Ya!”, the players, coaches, staff members and assorted Rose Bowl organizers sat down underneath flags representing the Pac-12 and Big Ten conference members.

Former Corona Centennial defensive lineman Jaylen Johnson, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection this season as a junior, was selected to help make the first spinning salad before people began to eat. But not after he was helped into an apron first.

“I’m a rookie but it was a fun experience for sure. … I’m looking forward to eating it all,” Johnson said before being asked who he thought would be the biggest eater of the night. “I would say myself but I’m trying to watch what I eat before practice tomorrow. Some of the redshirt o-linemen, I’d put my money on them.”

Then two-time All-Pac-12 first-team offensive tackle Kaleb McGary cut the first piece of prime rib, which he gave to head coach Chris Petersen. McGary was pleasantly surprised to find that Lawry’s had a chef’s outfit big enough for his 6-foot-8 frame.

McGary was surprised to be selected for the job.

“I don’t have any idea; I just got told I have this job. I’ve never sliced prime rib off of a rack like that so it’s definitely a new experience, but I’ve carved a lot of meat in my day,” McGary said.
