Football is back on television again tonight with the ranked TCU Horned Frogs kicking off this weekend’s action.
While there aren’t a whole bevy of games with national implications similar to what we saw with the UW/Auburn and Notre Dame/Michigan matchups last week, there are certainly some games to pay attention to, including a couple right here within our conference.
Let’s get into our Week 2 Rooting Guide for Washington Huskies fans. You’ll find the full TV / Streaming schedule just below.
UCLA at #6 Oklahoma
The PAC has some fixin’ up to do after UW’s disappointing loss to Auburn last week. Right now, the Big 12 looks like the biggest threat to the PAC 12 placing a team – even an undefeated-in-conference team – into the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma is the Big 12’s best team. By far.
It doesn’t hurt that UW gets to play UCLA this season. I know that the whole “transitive property” idea is weak sauce, but we cannot pretend that members of the selection committee do not apply it when the situation calls for it.
Can I get an eight clap?
#3 Georgia at #24 South Carolina
One of the consequences of Auburn’s win over UW is that the odds of the SEC sending two teams to the CFP increased substantially. Auburn gives the SEC a huge win over a top 10 team and, thus, boosts the resumes of any team that either plays Auburn or plays common opponents.
One of UW’s hopes is that Auburn comes out of the SEC as one of the top two teams (‘Bama is a given). Georgia’s trip to South Carolina looks like one of those opportunities to hang an early loss on a serious contender. The Gamecocks are a very tough out. While they don’t have anything flashy to offer on offense, they play a similar brand of bend-don’t-break defense that UW runs. They’ve got the bodies to really muddle up an opponents game plan and can definitely keep this one close with a chance to win at the end.
Go cocks (that’s what she said).
Rutgers at #4 Ohio State
I only put this here just so we could all have a reason to laugh at all of those ESPN commentators that raked UW over the coals for easily beating the “cupcake” that is Rutgers.
#2 Clemson at Texas A&M
I know that most of you hate Jimbo. I have a family friend whose husband worked in the FSU athletic department and whose best friend was Jimbo’s ex. From the stories I’ve heard, your disgust is well placed.
Nevertheless, it wouldn’t be a horrible thing to see Clemson have their automatic bid to the CFP put on probation with a loss to the Aggies. Jimbo does know or thing about coaching, has some real hosses on his team and gets to play at home. We ought to always be on upset alert with games like this early in the season.
#17 USC at #10 Stanford
I saw some debating on who we Husky fans ought to root for going on in a previous thread. This isn’t that complicated folks:
/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/12867253/1026032508.jpg.jpg)
- before you win a national championship game, you must win a playoff
- before you can win a playoff game, you must win a conference
- before you can win your conference, you must win a division
USC is playing a team in our division. Full stop.
Root for USC. Nothing else matters.
If you’d like to qualify this rooting guide by saying something like “well, yeah, sure, but I hope Stanford puts up a good fight and gets Bryce Love on track so that they are better ranked when we play them”, fine. I’ll accept that.
But from a purely “what is best for UW” perspective, we really want USC to win this game. I’m sure that I’ll have no disagreements on this assertion in our comments below.
Below is the full schedule of Friday night and Saturday games. Consider this, as always, your open thread to discuss all college football action this weekend.
