Huskies, Cougars fans sound off on Twitter for team pride

It’s no secret that the Washington Huskies and Washington State Cougars aren’t terribly fond of each other.

Like so many in-state rivalries, the two programs and their respective fanbases engage in a near-constant battle for supremacy. Husky fans will tell you that the Cougs are their younger brother – feisty and fun to fight with, but ultimately not much of a threat. On the other hand, Cougs fans rail against their rival’s perceived air of superiority, insisting that they deserve to be taken just as seriously.

This year, that debate is a little more interesting.

The Huskies had a tumultuous season that saw them lose three games they probably should’ve won (Against Auburn, Oregon and Cal) before beating the Cougs for its sixth consecutive season in the 2018 Apple Cup. The Dawgs went on to the Pac-12 title game, where they beat Utah to earn a coveted trip to the Rose Bowl – where they lost to Ohio State.

The Cougs, on the other hand, ripped off 10-wins during what was supposed to be a down year. They took down Oregon and Cal, but lost a close game to USC and were soundly beaten at home by the Dawgs. They made the Alamo Bowl however, where they went on to beat Iowa State to produce Washington State’s first-ever 11-win season.

So Washington won the head-to-head matchup, won the conference and made the better bowl game. Washington State lost head-to-head but did better against two common opponents, and won their bowl game. As a result, declaring one of the teams outright “better” than the other is more difficult than in years past – but that hasn’t stopped the fans from waging their annual war of smack-talk with as much passion as ever.
