The senior linebacker leads the Huskies with 33 tackles through three games.
Washington senior linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven was named Monday the Pac-12 defensive player of the week for the first time in his career.
The senior from Menlo Park, Calif., had a team-high 11 tackles as the UW defense held Utah to just seven points and 261 yards of total offense in a 21-7 victory in Salt Lake City. Three times in the fourth quarter, the Huskies held the Utes out of the end zone despite Utah moving deep into UW territory.
Burr-Kirven has led the Huskies in tackles every game this season, and his 11.0 tackles per game ranks fourth in the Pac-12.
It’s noteworthy that, in the team’s weekly awards handed out Monday, senior cornerback Jordan Miller was named the defensive player of the week. Miller had an interception and forced a fumble against Utah. (A team can only nominate one defensive player to the Pac-12 each week.)
