While it was only an exhibition, Washington Basketball upset the Nevada Wolfpack, who were recently ranked 7th in the preseason top 25 AP Poll
Washington basketball is in a great place right now. Without Noah Dickerson, who was held out due for precautionary reasons, the Huskies still thrashed the Nevada Wolfpack 91-73 in a charity exhibition game. Not to worry though Husky fans, he’ll be ready to open up his senior season when it begins on November 6th. The injury did open up some playing time for four-star recruit Bryan Penn-Johnson though, who scored four points on 2-2 shooting and he pulled down a rebound in nine minutes of playing time.
Nowell is Maturing
We saw this Nevada team go all the way to the Elite 8 last year, and they returned their two biggest stars, twins Caleb Martin and Cody Martin. The Husky offense was clicking on all cylinders against the tough Nevada defense, and that started with Jaylen Nowell. He went 12-15 from the floor and ended the night with 26 points. Nowell is going to be a huge piece of the offense the offense this year, and this game is a promising sign for him.
Thybulle is a Superstar
Matisse Thybulle has a great chance to repeat as Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. He’s also going to be very important to the Washington offense this season. He put up 17 points and six assists, but that’s not the most important part of his stat line. He also had five steals and three blocks. He’s the perfect player for Mike Hopkins‘ 2-3 zone, and he’s going to make an even bigger impact in year two of the Hopkins era.
The Dawgs Are Ranked!!!
The Huskies snuck into the preseason AP poll, and round out the poll at number 25. They join Oregon and UCLA as the only other ranked Pac-12 teams. This is nothing but a building block for the Huskies, who upset two top 10 teams last year, and have already proven their potential for the 2018-19 season by beating 7th ranked Nevada. The Huskies were picked to finish third in the Pac-12, but they have a real chance to win the conference this season. Stay strong Husky basketball fans, the Dawgs are back!
